The Fizz @ 50 series

A series of fifty short pieces for double bass and piano from composers throughout the world, instigated by David Heyes to celebrate his 50th birthday. Each composer received a bottle of champagne (Fizz) as payment.

Brazilian Boat Song is a lyrical and evocative work melding two seemingly disparate musical worlds and styles. The long lyrical lines for double bass are wonderfully supported by the barcarolle inspired piano accompaniment and this would be ideal for any young bassist who is just venturing into low thumb position. The challenges, both musical and technical, are simple and effective and the composer has created a work that has much to offer to the performers and audience alike.

Jay Mackie writes: 'Brazilian Boat Song is a birthday present written for David Heyes in the form of an expressive and wistful barcarolle where maybe a Venetian gondolier meets a beautiful Brazilian lady! The sweeping 6/8 melody uses largely the beautiful, lower solo register of the double bass and the piano accompaniment uses all the harmonic devices of Brazilian jazz, which is a personal favourite jazz genre of mine.

The spread chords are to be played 'quasi guitarra' and make the most of the languorous, luxurious harmonies and show your enjoyment of them through the music.'

Brazilian Boat Song was premiered at Wells Cathedral School (Somerset, UK) on 24 February 2013 by Sally McDowall (double bass) and Gus Tredwell (piano).
