Poem Basso VI is dedicated to Fausto Borem and 'all open-minded bassists', and is one of a growing number of works for unaccompanied double bass by Teppo Hauta-aho, each dedicated to a specific performer.
In one extended movement, Poem Basso VI explores a number of pizzicato styles and techniques, demonstrating the unique atmospheric soundworld of this prolific Finnish composer-bassist. Written almost exclusively in bass clef, the piece explores many modern techniques, but still within a musical and defined structure and framework, also making effective use of thumb pizzicato in the higher registers.
Poem Basso VI was premiered by Teppo Hauta-aho at the Paris Conservatoire in November 2008.
