Danish composer Louis Glass (1864-1936) was a successful and prolific composer but was always in the shadow of his compatriot, Carl Nielsen. His style is distinctive and accessible, typical of the late-romantic style of the late 19th-century, and he produced a wealth of music which deserves to be better known outside Scandinavia.

Spring Song Op.31 (Frulingslied), composed in 1903, was originally for cello and piano (or chamber orchestra) but transcribes beautifully for the double bass. It would suit any good intermediate bassist with some technical skill in thumb position, and demonstrates the lyrical and cantabile qualities of the double bass. The accompaniment is expansive, restless and supportive, contrasting a more lyrical and cantabile vocal line, and this would be suitable for any recital or audience and is a stylish and elegant addition to the transcription repertoire.
