Studied music at Bangor University in 1988 (under the professorship of the composer William Mathias). Karen was taught flute by Hilary Jones of the Halle Orchestra and Myra Bennett of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. She also studied with international soloists such as William Bennett, Susan Milan and Karen Jones.
Since graduating she has played and taught widely in the south of England. She has also played with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and recorded many CDs with the orchestra as a member of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus as well as performing at the BBC Proms. Karen is a member of the Dorset Chamber Orchestra.
In 1997 a flute concerto was written for her by Gary Wilkinson which was premiered in Sherborne, Dorset. She can also be heard regularly in many pit orchestras in shows around the region! The Vaila Trio is a popular woodwind trio (2 flutes and bassoon) comprising of members from the Dorset Chamber Orchestra.
These arrangements are as a consequence of playing in the Vaila Trio, and also the need for ensemble music at GCSE, AS and A level, which are for mixed combinations of wind instruments, of varying standard without the need for piano.
Karen is currently Professor of Flute at the Royal Marines School of Music, Portsmouth, which involves training the flautists of HM Bands to degree and diploma standard.
She is Professor of flute at Portsmouth University and has also had the honour of teaching at the Welsh College of Music and Drama Junior Dept, Wells Cathedral Specialist Music School, and currently also teaches at Sherborne School for Girls, Leweston and Bryanston.
In 2000 she graduated with a Masters degree in music education(neurology/psychology of music) from Trinity College, and eventually hopes to continue her interest in psychology and music to doctorate level…..when she can find the time!
