Composer Information: Nigel Penfold

Nigel studied saxophone, clarinet and piano at Trinity College of Music, London where he obtained a first class honours London University Bachelors degree in Music. This was followed by further study for the MA in Musical Analysis and Theory at Reading University studying under Jonathan Dunsby.

He currently divides his time between the disciplines of performing, teaching, composing and arranging. He is arranger and co-director of several swing and jazz ensembles as well as being in demand as a freelance performer in various other musical genres.

The majority of his teaching takes place at Harrow School, Heathfield School for Girls, Pinner and for the Hertfordshire County Music Service.

He is currently interested mainly in composing and arranging music for educational purposes although he has also composed and arranged a cross genre repertoire for various ensembles including wind orchestra, chamber wind groups, mixed voice choir, school orchestras, big band, swing band, etc.

Jazzy Starters is his first publication for Spartan Press and was intended to provide enjoyable repertoire to saxophonists in the early stages of their musical learning.
