Badenoch and Strathspey Music Festival Entry from Spartan

Nothing to do with the satirical and rather naughty film of the same name, Meet The Spartans was an entry in the Badenoch and Strathspey Music Festival this year. The specially composed piece was written as part of Spartan's 20th Anniversary year. Mark adapted SP444 (Entry of the Gladiators for flexible wind ensemble) to include quotes from 'Scotland the Brave', 'Rule Britannia' and the Monty Python Theme 'Liberty Bell'.

The Spartan Press orchestra (see picture) featured Pat Goddard on Clarinet, Annette Reavley on Trumpet, Myk Smith on Cornet and Mark Goddard on Bassoon.

The performance went down rather well, and the adjudicator (Dorothy Howden) awarded an 'Outstanding' mark and selected the Spartans to appear in the prize-winners’ concert (on Friday 13th!) plus a broadcast on the local radio station. Full toga costume was worn for both performances, although radio listeners would have had to use their imagination, obviously!

Watch a low res, unofficial video of the full performance (28meg).
