New webmaster appointed

In December 2006 and January 2007, we interviewed a number of candidates for our new Web Developer's post (see advert below) and are now pleased to announce the appointment of

Markku Niskanen

to the post, who moved to Laggan for the job with his wife Riitta in February. Markku, from Finland, left his current position with IBM near Glasgow to fulfil his goal of living and working in the Scottish Highlands. He has had a wide experience of developing websites using PHP and MySQL, plays the guitar and is fond of the music of Sibelius (of course!), Stravinsky, Shostakovich and Borodin. He also likes cats and dogs!

The Spartan job ad, previously on with Monster.co.uk and JobServe.com, looked like this:-

PHP Developer required at Spartan Press
Candidates must have commercial PHP experience and an excellent knowledge of MySQL, Linux and Apache and ideally of XML, JavaScript, HTML, CSS and AJAX. Join the vibrant team of a growing classical music publishing company specialising in the educational market, operating from the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. The role includes development and maintenance of a variety of different websites for both new and existing clients - (some music biased, and some not), including the company's own burgeoning intranet, plus general IT support on-site (hardware and software). Other advantages (but not mandatory) would include playing a musical instrument (or at least appreciating classical music) as well as able to work alongside St. Bernard and Pyrenean Mountain dogs! This is a great opportunity to work within the Cairngorms National Park for a small yet well established family run business, as a key team player in keeping the company moving forward.

A subsidised on-site accommodation package within our converted Victorian Shooting Lodge is available on the Strathmashie estate if required. This is a spacious and well appointed two bedroomed (ex-holiday) flat (see www.strathmashie.co.uk).

By way of contrast to programming, the job can be tailored to include some other less intensive and more varied roles associated with the running of a busy music publishing company. The ability to pop a long ball into the centre, yet get back into your own penalty area quickly when the pressure is on, as well as making those memorable heroic runs down the wing (corporately speaking of course) are all part of the 'spirit of the job'.
You can read more about the company as well as the family behind it all on www.SpartanPress.co.uk
