On receiving a new piece for the cello guitar duo...
I was more than happy when Paul Coles replied to my request for a new piece for the cello guitar duo. I have been playing with Michael Kevin Jones since 1990, based in Madrid, our unique cello guitar duo has been devoted to the original repertoire for this combination. We have recorded 5 CD’s and have always used only original music written expressly for this instrumental combination. Since our first recording, "Original music for cello and guitar" (EMEC, E-001. 1992) where we did include a piece by the English composer Nicholas Marshall called "Cool Winds", we didn't have a new "English" première so we are really pleased to announce this new "Suite" "Evocaciones de España" that Paul very kindly dedicated to us.
We are very happy with the result and I believe it is going to be a very successful suite. It is a modern piece with an actual language that transmits a vision on Spanish themes. Paul knows the guitar very well so he is comfortable writing for six strings, and I have really nothing to say about the combination of the guitar and the cello - you just need to listen to both instruments together. Paul writes in a very direct way, his ideas are strong and clear and they have a powerful, evocative atmosphere.
We will première his "Evocaciones de España" on 9th March 2006 in Salamanca, then we will have it in our duo programme for the rest of our season, that means it will played in other Spanish cities like Palencia and Madrid. Later on we will première it in Gibraltar, Oman, New York, Vancouver, Toronto, etc and by December 2006 we will record our 6th album and that will be the title of the CD "Evocaciones de España" along with classical transcriptions of Spanish music by de Falla, Albeniz and Granados.
“Congratulations and thanks for a new great piece for our repertoire”
