Since 24th March, 2011, our music on hold has been playing tracks from the accompanying CD for Cellowise 2, another volume in this highly acclaimed series for Cello and Piano. The Cellist is William Butt and the pianist Archie Chen. The book covers grades 4 - 8 and includes music by Handel, Bach, Mozart, Paganini, Brahms, Moussorgsky/Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev.
Music on Hold - a short history!
From 11th September, 2008, our music on hold played tracks from Cellowise, an established collection of arrangements for cello and piano from the popular classics. The standard is from Grade 3 upwards and included are Bach Badinerie, Handel Sarabande, Haydn Gipsy Rondo, Gossec Gavotte and Tambourin, Brahms Hungarian Dance and other favourites with attached CD of top quality performances making a pleasant and varied recital programme both to listen to and of course to play.
The book presents a collection of more than 60 gypsy tunes from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, collected and arranged for solo instrument with chord symbols by Gundula. The companion CD for the fiddle version was recorded live by Gundula Gruen herself (violin) and Zivorad Nikolilc (accordion). The CD with the C and Bb instruments includes other instruments too. Countries represented include Russia, Hungary, Romania, Ex-Yugoslavia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Romany Tunes and some virtuoso gypsy pieces to finish. Difficulty level ranges from easy to advanced!
From 26th February, 2007 - 10th September, 2007, we were playing selected tracks from Edward Maxwell's new series for brass Spiky Airs, available in versions for Trumpet, Horn, Trombone. Each of these instrumental books includes a companion CD with backing tracks featuring recordings of live soloists. There is also a version of 'Spiky Airs' in preparation for Brass Quintet.
From 16th August, 2006 - 26th February, 2007, we were playing selected tracks from each title in Spartan's new Let's Rock series by Roy McCormack, available in seven different versions: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, Violin and Cello. Each book includes a companion CD with backing tracks and featuring recordings of live soloists.
From 17th May, 2006 - 16th August, we playing selected tracks from each title in Spartan's Football Crazy! series by Edward Maxwell, available in five different versions: Trumpet, Trombone, Clarinet, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax.
From 7th February - 17th May 2006, we played tracks from the Northern Saxophone Quartet's CD 'The Cowles Collection', available from Foxglove Audio, FOX088. Featured on the CD is a recording of the Suite for Harpsichord and Saxophone Quartet by Colin Cowles, just published by Spartan Press (SP750).
From 24th October 2005 to 7th February 2006, our music on hold included tracks from the backing CD to Spartan's new book Viola Jazz, Rock 'n' Bow by John Widger.
Between April and October 2005 we presented a recording of The Frog's Desire (SP288) by Jane Sebba - the piece, for voice and one or two bassoons was recently published by Spartan Press. Jane organised the recording which was mixed by Missak Takoushian. The entire opus lasts just over a minute.
From about May 2004 to April 2005 we gave Cecilia McDowall's Piper's Dream an airing following its release and before that, the music on hold was Useful Music's CD of works by Graham Lyons called Sonata (on hold from June 2003 to May 2004).
