Memphis Waltz was commissioned by David Heyes with funds provided by The Friends of Junior Trinity, as part of DOUBLE BASS 2000, and premiered at Trinity College of Music (London) on 8 October 2000 by Georgina Poad (double bass) and Mark Ray (piano).

Originally published in 'Bass Moods' - now out of print - this one movement work is full of rhythmic energy and momentum, written in the lower orchestral register of the double bass, and has a confident and independent piano accompaniment. There are few challenges for the good intermediate bassist.

The composer writes: 'The Memphis Waltz was mainly written on a visit to Memphis with the composer's folk group, where they visited many of the famous sites that account as the birthplace of rock and roll, and the blues. The piece reflects and tries to sum up the atmosphere of the town.'

Edward McGuire was born in Glasgow in 1948 and is one of Scotland's foremost and respected composers. He studied composition with James Illiff at the Royal Academy of Music, and with Ingvar Lidholm in Sweden, and won a number of prestigious prizes during this time. His works are regularly broadcast and he has received commissions from Glasgow University, New Music Group of Scotland, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, St. Magnus Festival and Edinburgh International Festival. 'Source' and 'Calgacus' were both performed at the Proms and in 1995 he was one of several Scottish composers represented on BBC Radio 3 'Composer of the Week'. Recent works include the ballet 'Peter Pan', a children's opera 'Caketalk', 'Glasgow Symphony' and an opera, 'The Loving of Etain'.
