An important new work by one of the UK's leading young composers. Based on one of Sir Malcolm Arnold's most haunting melodies: the theme from "Whistle Down the Wind". The composer describes it as a series of scenes in search of the tune, which is heard in all its glorious beauty towards the end.

...I warmed to the piece very much, and the fact that one only 'discovers' the theme in its unfettered state at the dénouement provides a neat twist that I'm sure Arnold would have appreciated. The various musical cameos – and they really do emerge in scenic terms, at least in my own mind as I played the piece through – hang together as a sort of collage, in which the theme is gradually permitted to drip from the composer's brush, as it were...Malcolm Arnold, who died only a few years ago, was a wonderful symphonist and all-round musician whose adroitness and musical sleight-of-hand skills provided the perfect fodder for this new work.

...Matthew Taylor's Fantasy on the main theme [from the film score Whistle Down the Wind]retains both the tension and wistful quality of the original. An interesting piece for advanced students.
